Today's Simple Pleasures
Cuddling with my baby girl
Going back to sleep after our early-morning feeding
Waking up to a jubilant "Mom!!!"
Sunshine and nice spring weather
Taking a shower before noon
Talking to friends
Appreciating a clean kitchen
Tight hugs
Reading the "Ensign"
Snuggling on new sofas
Watching HGTV
Some peace and quiet (thank goodness for nap time)
Seeing Bryan's excitement over sidewalk chalk
Watching the boys play together
Getting squirted by a squirt gun
Hearing Matty laugh
Watching Ari sleep
Seeing David after work
Going shopping for an hour by myself
Walking around "The Quilted Bear"
Eating a strawberry cupcake from the bakery
Being edified at Enrichment
David doing the dishes without being asked
Bedtime "besitos"
Hearing "Mom, I love you."
Newborn squeaks
Putting on cozy sweats and watching basketball w/ David
It's been a good day. :)

Grandpa's Visit

I wanted to post a couple pics from my Dad's visit a few weeks ago. He came out for both Cambria and Ariana's baby blessings, and we loved being able to spend time with him! The boys were especially excited to have him here. :) They got to go to McDonalds, go to the John Deere tractor store, play at the park, ride bikes, play with cars, tools, and knights, and play lots of Memory games. We all wish Grandpa (or "Bam-pan" as Matty calls him) lived closer so we could do fun things with him more often!
Here's when he first got to the house. The boys just about tackled him on the front porch!

Here he is meeting Ariana. :)

He's got his hands full in this picture!

Playing at the park with Matt. What a great grandpa!

A little bit about Matt these days...
With all the excitement over Ariana, I thought I'd take a minute to write a little about Matthew. He's done pretty well with the addition of a new baby, but he does act out a bit more. I've never been more aware of his mischievous side, and of course he gets into the most trouble when I'm stuck sitting down nursing. (We haven't mastered the nursing-while-chasing-after-kids trick, yet...) Still, he holds a special place in my heart as my baby boy, which he still is despite his size. He's not even two yet, but he's huge, especially next to Ari! :)
I love this pic of his pudgy little feet. They look just the way my feet looked the week after Ari was born (swollen and gross) except his are cute. :)
Here are a few funny things about him lately...He has a thing for baby wipes. He grabs one any chance he can get and I find discarded ones all over the house. He'll even move furniture around so he can climb up and reach the ones on the baby's changing table. It's crazy, and a rather expensive little fetish... Wipes don't come cheap these days, unfortunately.
When he's mad or frustrated, he spits. Not like a spit-in-your-face kind of thing, but just the kind of spit where he makes bubbles roll down his chin. It's pretty gross. And it's not like he doesn't have enough drooling issues as it is! I'm sure he knows I don't like drool, so this is his way of really getting to me.
He repeats the first syllable of most words he says. For example: "Da-daddy," "Ba-baby," "Ca-car." He just uses single words, but it's easy enough to know what he's saying because he'll group words together, like, "Eat. Oatmeal. Daddy." (Translation: I just had breakfast and Daddy gave me oatmeal.) Hopefully eventually he'll drop the stuttering and start talking in real sentences. For now, though, it's cute.
He sings all the time. It's hard to tell what he's singing most of the time, but he sure can carry a tune!
He likes to wave at people, and he has the cutest little Miss America wave. It's enough to make anyone smile. :)
He does not like to be in the spotlight (unlike his older brother). He ducks his head in embarassment at the smallest things! He's always been super sensitive, though, so it's no surprise. He's just a big sweetheart!
He's still a good little eater. He loves to eat! He is super messy, though, as you can see in this video. Every kid needs a video of them sleeping during a meal, right? Poor kid. :) He also likes to just keep his food in his mouth and suck on it, like a little squirrel! It's pretty gross.
As crazy as he is sometimes, I sure do love him to pieces. He certainly keeps us on our toes, but he keeps us smiling, too! :)

What's in a name??
David and I don't take picking names very lightly. Bryan's name jumped out at us because it's of Celtic origin and means "strong." David served his mission in Ireland and really likes Celtic names and felt like Bryan was the perfect name for our first son. We had a harder time with Matt's name. We put a lot of thought into it and still hadn't decided by the time we were getting ready to leave the hospital. When the nurse cornered us with the birth certificate form we both just felt like Matthew was a good choice (means "gift of God"), and so we ended up with our Matt.
I think I had such a hard time with Ari's name because there are so many cute girl names to choose from! There are probably a good 20 names that I would have been happy with, but David wouldn't even consider most of them. A lot of it for him has to do with pronunciation. There are lots of cute names that are just too tricky for him to say w/ his Spanish accent (Brooklyn, Brinley, etc.) And then some other names that I liked were too close to Spanish words. For example, Savannah is a lot like the word for sheet (sabana), so even though we both liked the name in English, every Spanish speaker we mentioned it to immediately thought of "sheet."
The most important things for me in choosing her name were that I wanted it to sound feminine, and I didn't want people to have a hard time pronouncing it in English. After teaching school and struggling with numerous names (calling roll the first day was always such a pain!), I'd decided that I wanted to spare our daughter the hassle of having to correct people all the time, especially with such a unique last name which people have enough trouble with. So even though I was the one that initially liked and suggested the name Ariana (means "holy one" or "circle of light"), I started thinking after a while that it would be too tricky for people to say correctly. You could say "Air-iana," "Air-i-anna," "Ah-ri-ahna," etc. I even started writing it down and asking people to read it for me to see how they'd say it and got every pronunciation imaginable. Still, despite my hesitations, we put it down on her birth certificate form at the hospital knowing that we had 10 days to change our mind. David really felt strongly that Ariana was the perfect name for her, and since I'd felt that way at one point I decided to go along.
By the time we'd been home from the hospital for a day or so I decided Ariana just wasn't going to work, and so I referred to the baby as "Baby Girl." After a couple days we resorted to our 2nd pick which was Ashlyn, a name David surprisingly really liked as well. We announced it to our friends and family, but we never called the hospital to make the change. The weird thing was, as much as I liked the name, it didn't seem to fit our daughter, and so I continued to call her "Baby Girl!" I got to thinking that maybe the name Ariana wouldn't be so tricky after all. David's name is pronounced differently by different people (English vs. Spanish pronunciation) and he doesn't mind, so maybe I was making a big deal out of nothing. When I told David that I was giving the name second thoughts he just threw up his hands and said the final decision was up to me. Well, I decided it would work after all, and so we never called the hospital to make any changes. That's how our little Ariana ("Ari") got her name and now I can say I love it!
For the record, we pronounce it with the Spanish "a" sound (Ah-ri-ahna), but I'm not bugged like I thought I would be when I hear people say it differently. :)

Ariana's Blessing
We were able to bless Ariana in church this past Sunday. Not only was it special because it was Mother's Day, but my dad was visiting from Pennsylvania and was able to participate. David gave a beautiful blessing and Ari looked like an angel in her gorgeous dress. David's mom sent it out to us from Spain and we love it! Thanks to our friends and family who helped make this such a special occasion! It really was a wonderful way to celebrate Mother's Day.

Pics for Grandma :)
My poor mom is so far away and hasn't been able to meet our baby girl yet, so I'll be posting lots of pics and things for her in the coming weeks until she is able to come out for a visit. We love you, Mom, and can't wait to see you! That goes for all my in-laws as well! I wish everyone lived closer so we could see each other much more often!!

Here's a pic of the boys, just so they don't feel left out...

And here's a little video to see Ari in action. Of course she doesn't do much yet, but she's still fun to watch. :)
